Research Scientist (all seniority levels)
Flower Labs GmbH, Cambridge, United Kingdom and, HH
Do you want to actively shape the next revolution in machine learning? Are you looking for a chance to participate in the open-source AI movement? Do you want to use your talents to architect, design and implement tools and platforms that will be used by millions of people world-wide (including scientists, engineers, students), and have a profound impact on the future of various societally important domains such as medicine, and more? Then we are the right place for you!About UsFlower Labs is the world-class AI startup behind the open-source project Flower, the #1 framework and ecosystem for training AI on distributed data using federated learning. Companies like Banking Circle, Nokia, and Brave use Flower to easily improve their AI models on sensitive data that is distributed across organizational silos or user devices. Almost all AI today is based on centralized public data — a small fraction of the data we have; we believe that training on orders of magnitude more data will unlock the next leaps in AI. Flower Labs (YCW23) is backed by Y-combinator and prominent venture capital firms and angel investors including, First Spark Ventures, Factorial Capital, Hugging Face CEO Clem Delangue, Betaworks, and Pioneer Fund.About the RoleFor Flower to achieve its mission, we will need to solve a wide range of currently open problems related to federated learning broadly defined (touching upon machine learning and optimization, model compression, security and privacy, decentralized algorithms to name a few topics). If that is not enough, we will also need to invent, design and engineer a brand-new machine learning stack able to train large-scale ML models (and perform data analysis) irrespective of how data and compute resources are physically located; and while still respecting any data privacy concerns. The user must be able to do this as easily as they train a model on a GPU today. As a Research Scientist, you will have expertise in one of the topics relevant to this mission, and a passion to see the breakthrough research you perform be immediately deployed in the real-world. We are looking for people able to assume technical leadership roles, and work with others to build the critical components that will advance the Flower ecosystem forward. We have a preference for Europe-based applicants to better align with the current time zones of most of the team, but will consider applications from any location. Furthermore, we are especially interested in hiring individuals at senior levels (e.g., Senior and Principal levels). All research profiles will be considered, but we especially highlight the following profiles:Researchers with a proven track record in federated learning, and related areas.Individuals working in topics such as deep learning, natural language processing, computer vision, LLMs, foundation modelsor audio/speech with interest in applying said methods to federated and decentralized settings.Experimental scientists with backgrounds in model compression, embedded and mobile systems – in particular, those with computer architecture knowledge and/or experience in optimizing training algorithms.Hands-on systems researchers with an ability to architect and implement novel large-scale machine learning systems (especially with experience in open source).People with deep expertise in privacy and security fields of relevance to federated and decentralized machine learning, who have a pragmatic approach to their work.About theTeamYou can expect a collaborative fast-paced start-up environment containing a team of experts in their respective fields, in which everyone still learns something new every day. Due to the fact that we are still in the early phases of our ultimate mission (i.e., taking federated learning mainstream), you will have the opportunity to contribute ideas, be heard and influence the direction of the company across the board. On a personal level, we value (internal) collaboration over competition. We're working in a highly competitive field and believe that we can only win by collaborating and acting as one team. This role has the following set of required and optional qualifications.Must have QualificationsPhD or Masters degree in a relevant disciplinePrior experience in publishing meaningful papers in top-tier venues, or equivalent impact (e.g., high-impact work performed in AI labs)Ability to independently author, test, ship, and monitor features used in large software projectsPreference for async remote workExceptional Python skills, willingness to work with other languagesFamiliarity with common tools (Linux command line, git, Docker, …)Openness to adopting new toolingSolid understanding of distributed systems and networkingStrong written EnglishOpen, honest and transparent communication skillsOptional QualificationsTrack record of working in open-source projectsHands-on experience in PyTorch and multi-GPU environmentsSolid understanding of distributed systems, systems thinking and networkingÜber das Unternehmen:Flower Labs GmbH
